Doris M. Owens, age 92, of Ojai, passed away on January 4, 2018 in Ojai. Doris was born in Egin, Idaho on July 5, 1925 to parents Alexander and Viola McIntire. She grew up in Glendale, CA, where she graduated from Hoover High School and worked for the Immigration and Naturalization Services and then attended Brigham Young University. Doris was smart, confident and liked to be organized. She learned short hand and used it throughout her life. While in college, she met Duane E. Owens, they were married on Dec. 20, 1948 and were in their 70th year of marriage. They moved to Ojai on August 10, 1953 from Monticello, UT. Doris loved Ojai where the weather conditions were ideal for her to play tennis, a game she loved and excelled in.
She was very active and enjoyed taking her kids to the beach. Doris was proud of the trophies that she won while playing tennis in her older years. She loved to swim anywhere and shared with her kids her love of swimming.
She was very supportive of her husband. After his retirement as Principal of Nordholf High School, she accompanied him to Alaska where he built a log cabin. Shortly upon returning to Ojai, they spent eight years managing Scorpion Ranch on Santa Cruz Island. They had many wonderful adventures and were able to share their love for the Island with thousands of visitors over the years.
Doris was a strong and independent lady. She served faithfully in many capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Relief Society President, where she taught lessons, coordinated service, sharing of meals and supporting large fund raising activities to help build the church in Ojai. Serving and caring for others came natural to her. She was a loving and unselfish mother and grandmother. Doris always put others needs first. She loved being a homemaker and a special servant helping friends and neighbors. She also excelled in doing genealogy.
Doris and Duane had five children. Doris is survived by husband Duane, sons Jaret of Ojai, and Brian of Homer, AK, and daughter Linda Owens of Show Low, AZ. She is preceded in death by her daughters Janell Brubaker and Annette Owens. Doris is also survived by her 98 year old sister Lorraine. They were very close, with a special friendship. Doris has fifteen grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 11th at 3:00 p.m. at the LDS chapel at 411 San Antonio St. in Ojai, with a viewing starting at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow on Friday, January 12th at 9:30 am at Ivy Lawn Cemetery, Ventura, CA.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, CA 93003. Condolences may be sent to TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
